About DSTO

The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is part of the Department of Defence and provides scientific advice and support to the Australian Defence Organisation. DSTO is headed by the Australian Chief Defence Scientist, Dr Roger Lough, and employs about 2100 staff, including about 1300 researchers and engineers. It is one of the two largest research and development organisations in Australia.

DSTO - Mission, Vision & Values

Mission: Expert, impartial and innovative application of science and technology to the defence of Australia and its national interests.

To achieve its mission, DSTO will:
 

  • Influence the framing and implementation of defence policy through the use of science and technology.
  • Position Australia to exploit future developments in technology that show promise for defence application.
  • Provide advice and support to ensure that Australia is an informed buyer of its defence equipment.
  • Develop new capabilities, especially where there are special national demands, such as those related to Australia's unique circumstances.
  • Provide advice and support to increase the performance and reduce the costs of ownership of existing capabilities.
  • Assist industry to become better able to support the capabilities needed to defend Australia and, through industry, contribute to national wealth.
  • Collaborate nationally and internationally to strengthen the technology base available to Australia's defence and to support the Government's broader national development and international objectives.
